Review: Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder

Updated: Jan 22, 2021

A wondrously creative and fast-paced novel Poison Study is the first in the Study series by Maria V. Snyder.

About to be executed for murder, Yelena is offered a reprieve; Live in the palace and become a food taster for the Commander of Ixia or be executed for her crime.

After choosing to become the food taster, the Chief of Security, a master assassin named Valek, deliberately feeds her Butterfly’s Dust; a poison which needs a daily antidote to prevent her death, forcing her to stay and follow through on her agreement to risk her life for the Commanders.

But things take a turn for the worst when Yelena begins to develop magical powers she can’t control. Yelena must get these powers under control and keep them hidden, or be killed for being a magician, while a rebel plot to seize Ixia puts her life, and the lives of her newly found friends at risk.

I loved the chemistry and the dynamic between Valek and Yelena, and was captivated by their character development.

The plot and world Snyder has created is so interesting and vibrant that it has you wishing you could jump into the pages of the book and join the characters on their quests.

As an adventure/High fantasy novel with a romantic sub-plot Poison Study is perfect for Young Adults, and can also be enjoyed by New Adults and Adults who enjoy reading novels with the same attributes as the young adult genre.
