Review: War Of Hearts by Samantha Young

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

‘The impossibility of his choice had never been clearer or more agonizing. “Whatever I choose … I risk a woman I care about.”’

War of Hearts is the captivating first book in the paranormal romance series True Immortals by Samantha Young, writing as S. Young.

Thea Quinn has no idea what she is. All she knows is that her abilities have been a plague upon her life since she was a child. After years of suffering at the hands of a megalomaniac, Thea escaped and has been running ever since.

Alpha and Chief of Clan MacLennan, the last werewolf pack in Scotland, Connall’s focus has always been on the leadership and protection of his pack. Which is why watching his sister slowly die of a lycanthropic disease is emotional torture.

When Conall is approached by a businessman who offers a cure in exchange for the use of Conall’s rare tracking ability, Conall forges an unbreakable contract with him.

Conall must find and retrieve the key to the cure: dangerous murderer, Thea Quinn.

Thea’s attempts to evade the ruthless werewolf are not only thwarted by the Alpha, but by outside dangers. With no choice but to rely on one another for survival, truths are revealed, intensifying a passionate connection they both fight to resist.

“You should have left me to die, lass.”
“Probably. I guess I’m just going to have to take the chance you were bluffing.”

I am a huge fan of Samantha Young’s books and I was so excited when she announced she was writing an adult paranormal romance, and when I received the ARC I was so excited to discover it was just as good as I was expecting.

One of my favourite tropes is enemies to lovers, and it’s also one of the tropes where it’s easy for authors to over do it and I end up hating both characters and the book itself. That is not something you have to worry about when it comes to Samantha Young, who writes one hell of an epic enemies of lovers romance, and War of Hearts is another one to add to the list.

I loved the chemistry and tension between Thea and Conall, as well as how their relationship developed.

“You may be fast, Lass, but I’m faster.”
“I’m not at full strength.”
“Aye, well, I suppose we’ll see how we get on when you are.”

I really adored the urban fantasy world that Samantha Young has created in War of Hearts, the description of the Torridon Hills where the MacLennan pack live was so vivid I could picture it in my mind and makes me want to travel there just to see if maybe there really are werewolves living in the Scottish Highlands.

I can’t wait to read more from the True Immortals Series and revisit these characters.

War of Hearts is out now.
