Review: Once Perfect by Cecy Robson

I was hooked from the first paragraph, literally, and cannot describe how much I loved this book. Once Perfect is the first in the Shattered Past series by Cecy Robson, and is a definite must read.

Evelyn Preston’s life was looking good, up until her father committed suicide after being caught in an embezzlement scandal, leaving her with nothing.

Now, Evelyn is working her way through college as a waitress in a popular nightclub, but there’s something about the sexy head bouncer and underground MMA fighter that attracts her.

Mateo Tres Santos is ex-army who was dishonourably discharged after he ended up in prison for assaulting the man who hurt his sister. When he finds Evelyn in the middle of a panic attack at the club one night, he’s determined to find out what nightmares haunt her, and make sure nothing ever hurts her again.

Robson has created such wonderful and captivating characters, as well an astoundingly perfect plot that makes Once Perfect an outstanding novel.

I loved the way that themes and topics such as abuse and post-traumatic stress, were handled in this novel – not using them purely to create a tragic story or as a prop. Robson’s writing is so realistic that you don’t doubt the characters reactions or feelings for an instant.

I absolutely LOVED Mateo, he was so kind and supportive, and Evelyn was so down to earth. It was so wonderful to read a novel with such engaging and lifelike characters that they came to life before your eyes the moment you opened the book.

The explosive chemistry and humour between Mateo and Evelyn had me putting the book aside, to giggle into my hands (and have small fangirl moments) before I could continue reading. I also found myself putting the book down, purely because I didn’t want it to end.

Once Perfect is such a brilliant and sensational novel. I recommend to any New Adult readers and fans of J. Lynn.
