It is safe to say that I ABSOLUTELY LOVED this book.
I mean what’s not to like;
-Strong capable Female characters- while not being obnoxiously, stupidly, irritatingly 'I am woman hear me roar'? Check.
-Sexy, hot 'bad boy next door'? Check.
-Realistic and imperfect characters? Check.
-Believable, refreshing and creative story line? Double check.
Obsidian is one of those books that you fall in love with during the first page, and it doesn't let you down half way through either. The entire story was refreshing, and uniquely created in a way I have come to recognise as Armentrout's signature writing style.
I loved Katy, the strong 'go get em' protagonist"I was not going to be a bystander anymore." It was so refreshing to have a protagonist that is as down to earth and believable as Katy is. I mean all of Jennifer L. Armentout's characters are like this actually.
And Daemon, the smoking hot bad boy was written perfectly. He is not one of those imperfectly perfect male love interests, he is real and he cares. He has not been created solely to be Katy's 2 dimensional love interest, he is a deep and well written character who is willing to do whatever it takes to protect his sister and those he cares about. Armentrout has also balanced Daemon's dickish moments out perfectly with his caring saviour moments that readers still want to slap him upside the head for being a dick, without hating him and/or allowing him to lose his believability.
Although, and this may be the feminist in me, one of the best parts about this book is; although Daemon spends the majority of the book acting like a dick, Katy actually calls him on it. She makes it clear that she will not accept his behaviour and doesn't fall into his arms the moment he decides he wants to date her-"No. Sorry. You have spent months being the biggest jerk to me. You don't get to decide to like me one day and think I will forget all of that." and I think this is perfect.
The novel is not a love story with scenes of regular/supernatural life thrown in, but I believe it is primarily a story about friendship, sacrifice and loyalty above all else.
There need to be more books like this in the YA genre.
