I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
‘Wearing a pair of skis, I’d knocked Gray on his arse, literally, and only a few hours later, in his words, I’d done it wearing a pair of sky-high heels, only this time it was figuratively. Emotionally.’
Hold On is contemporary romance novella by Samantha Young, which is part of Young’s Play On series and published as part of The Kristen Proby Crossover Collection and can be read as a standalone.
Autumn O’Dea always tried to see the best in people while her big bother Killian has always tried to protect her from the worst.
After a series of relationship disasters and the unsettling realisation that she’s drifting through life aimlessly, Autumn decides some distance from her security blanket of her brother is needed and heads from Glasgow to a ski resort in Montana.
Promising herself some guy-free time, Autumn wasn’t counting on literally colliding with a sexy ski instructor on the slopes.
Grayson King is confident, smart, has a wicked sense of humour and isn’t like anyone she’s ever met. Autumn knowns falling for Gray can only end badly, after all their love are divided by an ocean and their inevitable separation is just another heartbreak away.
Suddenly my chest felt constricted as a wave of feelings toward him crashed into me. “I’m scared.” “Don’t be. I promise you there’s nothing to be scared of from me. This is the real fucking deal and I’m going to protect it with everything I have. Just say you’re with me.”
I’m a huge fan of Samantha Young’s work and loved Autumn when I read As Dust Dances (Play On #2) and was so excited that she was getting a story of her own. While I enjoyed Hold On immensely, I did think it felt quite rushed and unfortunately, I was left feeling slightly disappointed.
I loved the plot, characters, and writing but just wish there had been more time for things to develop and unfold at a more natural and realistic pace.
Autumn in As Dust Dances was such a strong and bright character who felt dulled down in Hold On, as if her character hadn’t been developed properly due to the shortness of the novella. I had loved Autumn from the moment I met her in As Dust Dancesand had been dying to see her get her happy ending, which she does get in Hold On, but I just feel like Autumn’s story should have been a full-length novel.
I think if I hadn’t read As Dust Dances, and was reading Hold On as a complete standalone without having been introduced to Autumn beforehand, I would have felt 100% satisfied with the progression of the novella but I just had such high hopes and expectations for Autumn’s story and her journey that I just wanted more than what we got.
As it is, I did love Autumn and Gray’s relationship and overall really enjoyed Hold On and still highly recommend it.
