Review: Breaking The Rules by Katie McGarry

“I’m tired of all the blackness inside me – this goo that sludges in my veins. I’m tired of being angry. I’m tired of being heavy. Letting the past go, it’s got to be easier, right?”

Another stunningly emotional novel by Katie McGarry.

For Echo Emerson, a summer road trip with the Boyfriend means getting away from her past, and getting to spend three months alone with sexy, smart, soul-battered Noah Hutchins.

But when the source of Echoes constant nightmares comes back into her life, she has a touch decision to make about what she really wants. Noah is soon faced with a similar decision on whether he should contact his last remaining relatives; the family who his mother ran from.

Is having a bad family better than having no family?

Breaking the Rules is book number 1.5 in the Pushing the Limits series, and is set between the events of Pushing the Limits and Dare You To. Unlike the rest of the series, which is aimed at young adults, Breaking the Rules is more of a New Adult novel.

I absolutely loved getting to read more about Noah and Echo. I loved being able to see how their relationship grew and matured, as well as how they managed to overcome both their personal issues and those of their relationship.

Noah and Echo are no doubt, the best couple ever – faults and all.

I did find that the Point of View sometimes changed a little too often, which at times broke the flow of the novel.

I loved that all Katie McGarry’s characters face such real issues and respond to them with a refreshing realism. The fact that McGarry can make me want to bundle all the characters in blankets and keep them safe, is one of my favourite things about reading her books.

Breaking the Rules is full of passionate characters, tender yet explosive chemistry, and is an unquestionably breathtaking novel that you will you emotionally invested 100% in each and every character.
